Introduction

Wero is a pan-European digital payment wallet developed under the European Payments Initiative (EPI). It enables fast and secure instant account-to-account (A2A) payments in under 10 seconds, allowing consumers to pay directly from their bank account via their mobile banking app without the need for a card.

For online payments, Wero uses a dynamic QR code or short code presented at checkout, which the customer scans with their mobile banking app to authorise the payment via Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).

Some of the main benefits of offering Wero as a payment method are:

• Pan-European reach: Backed by major European banks in France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and beyond, designed to scale across Europe
• Instant confirmation: Wero leverages SCT Inst (instant SEPA Credit Transfer), giving merchants real-time payment confirmation
• No card required: Customers pay directly from their bank account using their existing mobile banking app (no card details needed)
• Security: Every payment is authorised within the consumer’s bank environment using Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)
• Simple UX: Customers use a QR code to initiate payment through a familiar mobile banking experience
• Refunds supported: Supports partial and full refunds
• Get started quickly: There is no need for the merchant to have an account with Wero

At the checkout page, the customer chooses Wero as their preferred payment method:

• How to activate: Please refer to the How to activate section below
• Payment method type: Asynchronous - payment authorisation is confirmed in real time through webhook notification. You need to set up webhooks in order to get notified for asynchronous payments
• Refunds: Supports partial and full refunds
• Recurring payments: Not yet supported
• Pre-authorizations: Not yet supported
• Restricted MCC: Some Merchant Categories are not eligible to have Wero activated
• Μerchant countries: Available for merchants registered in France, Belgium, Germany & Luxembourg
• Customer countries: Available to customers in France, Belgium, Germany & Luxembourg
• Pricing: Please refer to our pricing page under the main navigation for more information
• Settlement: Customer payments are deposited next day into your business account for confirmed payments / successful transactions (i.e. have statusId = F)
• Additional notes: Wero is not available through Quick Pay or for payment orders with the disableExactAmount parameter set to true

How to activate Wero

Merchant Categories

There are some merchant categories that are not eligible to have Wero activated. If your business is in one of these categories, you will not be able to accept payments through Wero:
